Empowering America’s Heroes

RM When First Lieutenant Ryan McGuire lost his leg in a boating accident two years ago, his dream of becoming a pilot seemed out of reach. But with determination, hard-work and a solid support network, Ryan became the first amputee to finish pilot training.

"Without running and fitness I wouldn't be anywhere, and setting athletic goals was absolutely key to my rehabilitation. I've seen rehab athletes without specific sports goals, and they take longer to regain fitness and to get out of a wheelchair. Without setting specific marathon and triathlon goals, I wouldn't have regained fitness and speed, and I wouldn't still be in the US Air Force if I couldn't prove I could run as fast as anyone else with one leg. Setting the goal to run a marathon resulted in my rehab, which in turn enabled me to return to the Air Force and pilot training." - First Lieutenant Ryan McGuire, USAF
